No charitable deduction for non-itemizers
In general, taxpayers who are choosing to take the standard deduction, in comparison to itemizing their tax deductions, won’t be able to write off donations to charities.
However, federal law known as the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020 made a strong exception. It allowed people who claimed the standard deduction to write as much as $300 in monetary contributions in 2020, in order to encourage donations to charities during the pandemic.
Of course, the deduction was later expanded and extended for 2021, but it hasn’t been extended for this year too. Unless Congress decides for a second time, people who were claiming the standard deduction won’t be qualified for a deduction for charitable donations they could make in 2022.
