Sales Reps are vetted

There are over 3,000 dealers currently registered in the Costco Auto Program in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Costco trains and certifies dealership employees. In fact, some of them might act as a representative for other car-buying programs, or even serve on a dealer’s internet sales team.

It’s a known fact that once in a while, these employees are tested by Costco mystery shoppers, to check that they are constantly following the rules of discounted pricing and their pledge to give the best, no-stress buying experience. Dealerships that can’t follow these requirements will be kicked out of the program.

Transparency is important

When you check the Costco Auto Program, they will show you their list of pricing. You are allowed to review the vehicle’s invoice price, meaning that you will see how much the dealer paid the manufacturer, but also the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

Costco also has a team that is responsible for comparing its discounted prices with dealers’ prices. This way, they make sure their prices are competitive. Besides that, member advocates are there to help you with every step of the process.

There’s no money at stake for Costco

I thought it would be worth mentioning that Costco makes no money off its sales. If they want to be a part of the program, dealers have to pay a monthly fee. Costco car representatives have no loyalties whatsoever, so you can easily trust them as advisers, according to Philip Reed, an automotive expert.

How does it work?

If you want to start with the shopping process, you’ll first have to check with the Costco Auto Program website, or call their customer service line and discuss with a representative that can help you through the process.

After you choose a vehicle, you can easily review information about participating dealerships. However, you won’t find out the prices for specific automobiles unless you pay a visit to a dealer.
