#1 Filing cabinet: is it a useful buy?
In reality, it may seem like a great idea, but it can end up being a redundant buy! The impression is split, especially since they’re so big and a lot of the paperwork we need nowadays can be accessed and stored online. Those really big filing cabinets that may have a spot in your office may just be gathering dust.
You don’t need a whole piece of furniture to keep track of your warranties and receipts; a good index file will do the job just fine. And you can always keep a digital copy on your computer as well. It’s best to keep those big pieces of furniture for the corporate offices.
#2 Planners and journals
Unless you’re heavily into journaling and you picked this habit up years ago, don’t try to fool yourself into thinking you’re going to start now. What the real catch here is that there are plenty of gorgeous stationery supplies that we may want to buy, but they are not actually good for your wallet in the long run. Those really pretty, hardcover, spiral-bound planners that can come with anything from daily to monthly pages are there to attract your attention.
And they do catch our attention! But it’s way easier to use technology to keep track of what you’re doing, especially if there are things that come up unexpectedly and you have to alter your whole program. Of course, having a small agenda is useful, but those huge planners and journals are truly just impulse buys sometimes!
