#5 Freezer food
We know we preached before about the fact that you should buy in bulk certain items and then freeze them, as this will save you more money! However, just because you can freeze certain produce to make it last longer, it doesn’t mean you can keep it forever! And if you have had certain ready-made dishes in the freezer for a few months, it’s high time you tossed them!
The freezer is useful to prolong the shelf life of certain foods and even meat cuts by a few months, but if the bag you put them in looks like it got left out in a snowstorm instead of being in the freezer, they will not be as tasty as they should be. Do yourself a favor and toss out everything you haven’t even glanced at in the last six months.
#6 Old spices
If you don’t remember when you last used a certain spice, or even worse, when you bought it, there’s a high chance that you purchased it way over a year ago. Unfortunately, while spices do not actually go bad (unless moisture got into them because they weren’t in an airtight container), you will still have to throw them out.
With time, spices lose their flavor and potency, so even if you still have half a jar of paprika, it will be fairly useless to use it in a dish. Toss them out and replace them with new ones while making sure to buy smaller quantities of the spices you don’t use frequently. Otherwise, what money you save by buying in bulk, you’re throwing out with the spice you never got to use!
However, if you’re worrying that you may be too frugal at times, don’t worry! Here are some of the best examples that you’re doing the right thing and you’re actually money conscious!
