4. Frivolous pet purchases

As everyone knows, there are a couple of things our pets love most: one or two delicious and nutritious meals a day, a favorite toy or even two, a treat, and lots of affection. And now comes the question: what is often left unused? Pet paint, pets’ Halloween costumes, toothpaste for dogs, pet chime and many other useless items.

Most pet items get special attention when they’re brand new. And then, after a couple of sniffs, become invisible for good. So save your money. Or even better, you can donate to some rescue organizations or pet shelters.

5. Planners and journals

Have you ever experienced buying a beautiful planner and imagining yourself writing daily in it? Some planners and journals can be quite eye-catching and colorful, while their calendar and goal section may motivate you to start doing things. A lot of people are actually buying different kinds of planners right after New Year’s Eve to write their goals inside.

But how many of them are really using their planners all year long? You see, it’s way easier to keep track of your deadlines and tasks either with the calendar from your mobile phone or a productivity app. Some people may find some apps useless, and they stick with Microsoft Word documents or Google calendar when it comes to managing their tasks.

So yes, a lot of people who at some point purchased a planner or a journal are actually keeping them in a drawer or even in the attic.

6. Silly baby care stuff

New parents can be quite anxious, making them vulnerable to marketing strategies during their newborn’s first week. Talk with an experienced mom or dad before you spend your money on a diaper alarm, baby crying analyzer or fancy shoes for an infant who hasn’t yet started walking. You’re right, some of them are quite ridiculous.

Veteran parents will let you know which items they loved and really used in those early days and which were never taken out of the box. Here’s a tip that I keep hearing about: instead of spending, consider starting a baby’s college fund and putting every penny you can in there.
